As with all products, it is very important to check the ingredients for our skin products. The products we rub all over our bodies will directly affect the health and appearance of our skin. And you might be surprised to learn that many ingredients used for “cleaning” the skin are actually very harmful. Here are the top three ingredients to avoid in skin products:
- Triclocarban – This is a popular active ingredient added as an antibacterial. It is a pesticide that has been used in many commercial goods – including plastic toys and kitchen utensils.
Its antibacterial properties can actually encourage the development of antibiotic resistant bacteria. It can also cause disruption in the body’s hormone levels. Some studies have shown that it can be linked to breast-cancer.
- Fragrance – This is a “blanket” word for basically any mixture of chemicals used to make a specific scent. Depending on the chemicals used, they can have severely harmful effects on your body.
- Sodium laurel sulfate (SLS) – This is the active ingredient in garage floor cleaners, engine degreasers, and industrial strength soaps AND it is a very common ingredient in soaps, shampoos, and other skin products. This very powerful ingredient can easily damage your skin cells’ membranes and cause extreme irritation.
These are just three of the many ingredients found in skin products that can be harmful to our bodies. Others include Diethanolamine (DEA), Diaxone, Parabens, Synthetic dyes, and PEG-6. Most of these ingredients we can barely pronounce much less understand what they are and what they do to our bodies.
Be careful to read the ingredient list of your skin products before you buy them. Sometimes even products labeled “natural” or “organic” can contain damaging ingredients. The true test of a safe product is to read the ingredient list and see if you can identify and understand the ingredients.
